The season now known as Lent (from an Old English word meaning "spring," the time of lengthening days) has a long history. Originally, in places where Pascha was celebrated on a Sunday, the Paschal feast followed a fast of up to two days. In the third century this fast was lengthened to six days. He wrote in favour of conformity in all things to the rules of the Primitive Church; particularly in Praying for the Dead, in the use of Oil, and other ritual observances. The titles of two of his works are, 'A View and Correction of the Common Prayer;' and, 'The Paschal or Lent Fast Apostolical and Perpetual.' XXVII.
